United States Marks Twenty-Fourth Anniversary of September 11th
The United States marks the twenty-fourth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th.

What Happened?
On Thursday, the United States marked the twenty-fourth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. On September 11th, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft, flying two of them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and another into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. A fourth hijacked plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
On 9/11, 2,977 people were killed in the largest terrorist attacks ever conducted on American soil. The attacks were also caught on video, marking another first for American history.
Why it Matters
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 triggered what became known for many years as the Global War on Terrorism, or GWOT. During GWOT, the United States military invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, in addition to launching hundreds of smaller operations around the world looking for members of Al Qaeda, the terrorist group behind the attacks.
After 9/11, then U.S. President George W. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security, an enormous federal agency designed to try to incorporate and better coordinate dozens of different intelligence and law enforcement organizations. In October 2001, Congress passed the Patriot Act, which granted new powers and tools to law enforcement and intelligence gathering agencies. Most of the provisions of the original Patriot Act were incorporated into other legislation and remain in effect today.
DoorDash’s $79B Explosion — But bigger?
When DoorDash first hit the scene, critics brushed it off as “nothing new.”
And here’s the kicker: they were right.
Yet the founders of this "delivery business” knew something that the rest of the world missed.
Today, DoorDash is worth $79 billion, with a valuation increase of 110,800% for early investors.
But there may be a second chance with a company that recently grew 32,481%.
No, it’s not a food delivery service…
It’s a company that rests at the intersection of three fast-growing global markets, driven by the same vision of turning personal assets into income streams.*

In 2011, the U.S. military launched an operation in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that located and killed Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda and the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington D.C. A small team of special forces soldiers flew into Bin Laden’s compound by helicopter, breached the walls, and killed him there.
The U.S. military left Afghanistan in 2021, marking the end of the GWOT era. Between 2001 and 2021, the U.S. is estimated to have spent between four and six trillion dollars on GWOT. 2,456 U.S. military members were killed in action and thousands more wounded during that period. Total civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan during the same time have been calculated at around half a million.
In response to 9/11, New York City created NYPD Shield, a unique law enforcement and intelligence operation that became one of the most successful models in the world for anti-terrorism agencies. NYPD Shield contributed to the identification and arrest of hundreds of terrorist operatives around the world and has prevented dozens of subsequent attacks.
How it Affects You
For Americans who were under fifty at the time, 9/11 was their Pearl Harbor. The attacks of 9/11 and the response to it defined an entire generation of Americans. 9/11 transformed the U.S. government, American society, and culture in ways that are still being felt today.
