An Iranian ballistic-missile attack on strategically important Salti Air Base in Jordan damaged approximately nine American combat aircraft, providing another example of Tehran’s ability to inflict losses despite extensive U.S. and allied missile defenses.

The September 8th attack on Salti followed American strikes that destroyed five Iranian oil tankers. The United States said those attacks were retaliation for Iranian attempts to hit an American Navy warship with ballistic missiles. Iran then responded by firing missiles toward the American-operated facilities at Muwaffaq Salti, near Azraq in eastern Jordan. Jordan said its air defenses intercepted most of the incoming missiles and no American personnel were killed in the attack.

Iran’s latest attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan demonstrated that the six-month war between the United States and Iran remains dangerous even though it has increasingly evolved into a conflict characterized by limited, retaliatory strikes rather than continuous large-scale bombardment.

According to the Associated Press, during the attack on Salti some Iranian weapons succeeded in causing significant damage. According to reporting cited by Reuters, one U.S. A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft was hit and left missing a wing. Approximately eight F-15 fighter aircraft were also damaged, although their damage was described as minor and the aircraft were subsequently returned to service. Air & Space Forces Magazine identified the fighters more specifically as F-15E Strike Eagles and reported that the A-10 suffered severe wing damage…

The strike also illustrates how dramatically the character of the conflict has changed since it began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury against Iran. The initial campaign involved extensive attacks intended to damage Iran’s nuclear, military, and economic infrastructure. Six months later, however, neither side has achieved a decisive victory. The United States has avoided a ground invasion and continues to rely overwhelmingly on air and naval power.

The war has increasingly become a battle of attrition punctuated by short bursts of violence. A June ceasefire temporarily reduced fighting, and there was another month-long lull during the summer. But limited actions repeatedly produce retaliation.

The order of battle goes like this: the United States strikes Iranian missile launchers, radar installations, oil facilities, or tankers then Iran responds with missiles and drones against American warships, military bases, or regional allies. After Iran recently fired at U.S. naval vessels, for example, American forces attacked Iranian tankers. Iran then struck the base in Jordan and claimed attacks against ships near the Strait of Hormuz.

This pattern allows both sides to apply pressure without deliberately committing themselves to an all-out ground war, but it still carries risks. Each supposedly limited retaliation creates pressure for another response. Iran also possesses the ability to threaten American bases throughout the region and disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington can attack Iranian military and economic targets from the air and sea.

Neither Washington nor Tehran appears capable of forcing the other to capitulate, yet neither is willing to stop responding to attacks. If the Iranians manage to hit a U.S. warship and cause mass casualties, which they are actively trying to do, that could quickly change American public opinion and the political climate in Washington enough to initiate a full-scale ground war with Iran.
