U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to Lead Talks on the Future of Greenland

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to lead talks at the White House with European leaders on the future of Greenland.

What Happened?

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance is scheduled to lead talks with key European officials at the White House over the future of Greenland. The talks come after Denmark, which owns Greenland, gave a public press conference where they rejected any possibility of allowing the U.S. to acquire Greenland.

President Trump posted on social media that ‘The United States needs Greenland for the purposes of national security,’ adding that anything less would be ‘unacceptable.’ Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen and Greenland’s foreign minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, are expected to attend the White House talks.

Why it Matters

The aggressive move by the Trump Administration to make Greenland a formal part of the United States is highly unusual since the territory already belongs to a close U.S. ally. American military bases or installations are already permitted in Greenland, as is the development of any natural resources therein. Which means the U.S. can already build bases or harvest resources in Greenland.

From a national security perspective, Greenland offers the United States the ability to establish radar facilities near the arctic which would be useful for monitoring any potential missiles coming from Russia. During the Cold War, Greenland was utilized by the American military for exactly that purpose. But today, satellites provide continuous missile launch monitoring capabilities, eliminating the need for expensive and cumbersome ground installations in remote locations like Greenland.

The dispute between the Trump Administration and Denmark, a U.S. ally, could potentially become a serious one. Denmark has rejected any possibility of selling Greenland to the U.S., and several European heads of state, including French President Macron, have said they will stand by Denmark and resist with military force if the U.S. tries to forcefully acquire Greenland. A military move by the U.S. against Greenland would likely spell the end of the NATO alliance, while potentially triggering hostilities between the U.S. and Europe.

European countries could eject the U.S. military from Europe, a move some European leaders have already threatened if the U.S. tries to acquire Greenland by force. The U.S. has well over one hundred bases and installations across Europe, and they are crucial for the American military's ability to move people and supplies to places like the Middle East. Without bases in Europe, the U.S. military would effectively cease to be a global fighting force.

How it Affects You

Using a gun to take something that doesn’t belong to you is legally known as armed robbery. But when nations do it, sometimes there aren’t any immediate consequences. Former U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt’s Secretary of State Philander Knox once said, ‘Never let great achievements be tainted by a whiff of legalities.’ What is certain is that the U.S. can achieve all its current national security objectives without Greenland being a formal part of the U.S.
