U.S. Navy Strikes Second Boat it Claims was Transporting Illegal Drugs

Trump Administration launches strike on second drug carrying boat in the Caribbean to stem the flow of illicit drugs.

What Happened?

According to the Trump Administration, the U.S. Navy struck and destroyed a second boat in the Caribbean it claims was carrying illegal drugs to the United States.

The boat was hit with a missile that killed three people onboard, according to the U.S. military. President Trump posted about the strike on social media, saying, ‘The Strike occurred while these confirmed narcoterrorists from Venezuela were in International Waters transporting illegal narcotics (a deadly weapon poisoning Americans!) headed to the U.S.’

There was no immediate comment from the Venezuelan government on the strike.

Why it Matters

The Trump Administration has designated drug traffickers from Latin America as terrorist organizations, and the attack yesterday marks the second time this year that U.S. military forces have carried out a successful strike on purported drug traffickers. Illicit drugs are often transported by boat, plane, and submarine through international waters to reach destinations in the United States.

“Elon: Apple stopped innovating.” Here’s where the upside moved.

“Apple used to really bring out products that would blow people’s minds.”
- Elon Musk

Elon was right, Apple isn’t innovating, it’s just recycling.

The new iPhone? Thinner. Lighter. Familiar.

It sells.

But specs don’t change unit economics. Benefits do.

So while Apple keeps releasing new versions of the same thing, Mode Mobile innovates.*

Their phones earn real money for users.

A model built on paying the customer, not charging them more.

Traction that actually shows up on a P&L.

Mode’s pre-IPO success is obvious:

Deloitte’s #1 fastest-growing software company in North America
 32,481% 3-year revenue growth
 $75M+ in lifetime revenue
 55,000+ investors already on board
 Nasdaq ticker reserved: $MODE

Mode Mobile has already raised over $52 million.

But you can still get pre-IPO shares with a bonus available for early investors.

Their last round received over $50M in investments and sold out at $0.30/share – don’t miss this one.

Though Venezuela’s government has yet to respond specifically to the latest boat attack, President Maduro has criticized the U.S. government. Accusing the Trump administration of using drug trafficking accusations as an excuse for a military operation whose intentions are ‘to intimidate and seek regime change’ in Venezuela. The Trump Administration has denied it is trying to seek regime change in Venezuela.

Whether and to what extent, if any, the Venezuelan government is involved in illegal narcotics trafficking remains disputed. Some intelligence assessments claim that officials in Venezuela’s government are directly involved in illegal drug trafficking, while other assessments are less certain. Drug cartels often use a combination of coercion and bribery to convince government officials in Latin American countries to look the other way while they carry out their operations, and Venezuela is no different.

The more aggressive operations by the U.S. Navy will likely cause drug cartels to change their tactics as they have in the past when confronted with superior force. There is also a risk that the Venezuelan military could directly respond or threaten U.S. forces in the Caribbean, however, the Venezuelan government is likely well aware they are no match for the U.S. Navy. Still, they could potentially supply drug traffickers with heavy weapons, enabling them to inflict damage on American ships in the region.

There is little doubt that illegal drugs coming from Latin America take thousands of American lives each year. But it is also unclear whether more aggressive military action can stem the flow of illicit drugs.

How it Affects You

In the past, drug cartels often simply changed tactics whenever governments ramped up the use of force against them. That is the most likely outcome this time, though the U.S. military has the power to conduct sweeping attacks against drug cartels on a scale not previously seen.
