Two Killed and Ten Injured in Explosion at U.S. Steel Plant Near Pittsburgh
Two workers killed and at least ten injured in an explosion at the Clairton Coke Works plant near Pittsburgh.

What Happened?
Two people were killed and ten injured in an explosion at Clairton Coke Works, a production plant owned by U.S. Steel located near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. According to Allegheny County Emergency Services, five people were in critical but stable condition, while the other five were treated and released. An additional group of ‘multiple individuals’ was treated at the site though an exact number was not given.
U.S. Steel Executive Vice President Scott Buckiso said the explosion occurred around 10:51 a.m. on Monday at the plant’s coke oven batteries 13 and 14.
Why it Matters
The explosion at a U.S. Steel plant comes only six weeks after the $14.9 billion dollar acquisition of U.S. Steel by Nippon Steel was completed. The acquisition had previously been held up by both the Biden and Trump administrations on national security grounds, but President Trump finally approved the deal this year. One of the underlying issues driving the purchase was the need for modernization and upkeep at several U.S. Steel production facilities.

According to the Associated Press, the Clairton Coke Works site, which employs about 1,300 people, has experienced deadly explosions before. An explosion in 2009 killed a 32-year-old steelworker, while an explosion in 2010 injured more than a dozen. ‘While this is a sad and extreme event, it’s in a long line of failures that have taken place at this facility over many years,’ said David Masur, executive director at environmental group PennEnvironment.
PennEnvironment sued U.S. Steel over a fire at Clairton in 2018 along with power outages in 2019 and 2022. The lawsuit contended that the fire was caused by a series of related failures stemming from decades of poor maintenance and sub-standard safety practices. U.S. Steel settled that lawsuit in 2024, where it agreed to pay $42 million in penalties and upgrades.
The Clairton Coke Works plant has a long history of safety violations. The Allegheny Health Department has cited the Clairton Coke Works plant for violations every year since 2018. One of the driving forces behind the sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel was underinvestment in places like the Clairton Coke Works plant, which is the largest of its kind in the United States.
Since the exact cause of the explosion has yet to be determined, it is too soon to say whether or not poor safety conditions or underinvestment in facilities maintenance contributed to the blast. But based on the plant’s history, it seems likely that poor safety conditions were a factor in the August 11th explosion.
How it Affects You
Workplace injuries and fatalities have been increasing in the United States for the past several years, even as the Trump Administration, along with most major corporations, continue to push for fewer safety regulations for workers. For example, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration received a nearly 10% budget cut under the Trump Administration.
