Trump Renews Deportation Push for ICE Agents to Target 'Sanctuary Cities'

What Happened?

President Donald Trump doubled down Monday on deportation goals in the U.S.

He made strong claims about major cities that follow certain immigration practices that are opposed to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent's renewed agenda.

After meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 summit, Trump stated that ICE officials should turn their attention to New York and Chicago, in addition to Los Angeles.

Trump told reporters that these 'sanctuary cities' are 'where the people are' after criticizing Democratic leaders who oversee these areas.

In a Truth Social post on Sunday, the president called for ICE officials to 'do all in their power' to achieve this objective.

'ICE Officers are herewith ordered, by notice of this TRUTH, to do all in their power to achieve the very important goal of delivering the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History,' he stated.

Why it Matters

Trump's announcements come as ICE agents have reportedly been pressured to meet White House arrest quotas.

The aggressive set of demands has federal agents arresting 3,000 or more people a day as part of Trump's new immigration crackdown.

But ICE has paused such measures in the agricultural, hospitality, and restaurant industries following Trump's decision amid employer complaints.

'Our great farmers and people in the hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long-time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,' Trump said in a Truth Social post on Thursday.

Tatum King, of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations unit, wrote regional leaders to halt those investigations in those business fields, according to reports.

'We will follow the President’s direction and continue to work to get the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens off of America’s streets,' a Homeland Security spokesperson stated when asked to confirm the directive.

Trump's decision to prevent such disruption in those industry fields alone still raises many questions.

Many are bracing for the expected impact following a Supreme Court ruling allowing Trump to temporarily strip the legal protections for more than 500,000 migrants from four countries.

That concern also includes a ruling that will allow Trump to strip the temporary protected status of 350,000 Venezuelans.

With the decision to halt protections under a Biden-era program, the Department of Homeland Security will look to resume previous actions of mass deportation.

The lives of over half a million people may soon be disrupted while legal claims are still pending in court.

The Trump administration reportedly believes that there needs to be an end to the 'vicious cycle' of unlawful immigration.

It's a push by Trump, who believes these duties fall under the president's powers.

That belief will face bigger Supreme Court determination over lower court's ability to challenge such actions through nationwide injunctions.
