Trump and Putin to Meet in Alaska to Discuss Ending the War in Ukraine
U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin to meet in Alaska to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

What Happened?
The White House announced that Friday, August 15th, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska to discuss ways of ending the war in Ukraine. As of Monday, the meeting in Alaska would not include Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.
The meeting in Alaska will follow three earlier rounds of talks between the United States and Russia about the war in Ukraine, none of which resulted in an end to the war. The meeting also comes after U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff held ‘highly productive’ talks with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday, according to President Trump.
Why it Matters
The meeting in Alaska would be the first time Russian President Putin has been in the United States (outside the United Nations in New York) since 2009. Earlier talks between the U.S. and Russia this summer failed to forge an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, but Russia, the U.S., and Ukraine all want the war to end, although for different reasons and under different conditions.
In 2022 Mr. Putin said the war in Ukraine would last only a few weeks, and in 2024 Mr. Trump said he could end the war in his first day in office as President. Both Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin have been proven wrong about the war in Ukraine which is now in its third year. The summit in Alaska is as much about face saving for both as finding a way to end the war.

But Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin do want the war to end, albeit for different reasons. For Mr. Putin, getting Ukraine to agree to stop fighting and accept territorial losses would bring him a victory he has been unable to achieve by force on the battlefield. For Mr. Trump, ending the war would fulfil a campaign promise, although later than he had hoped.
Ukraine too wants to end the conflict because their population is war weary, but Mr. Zelenskyy has made clear Ukraine will not accept any losses of territory. The front lines have moved little in the past three years, with much of Ukraine’s eastern most territory occupied by the Russian military. Doubtless much of the population in those areas are pro-Russian and would prefer to be part of Russia rather than Ukraine, but a still sizeable minority of Ukrainians do not wish to live under Russian rule.
Because neither Russia nor Ukraine appear willing to cede territory, finding a way to end the war will be difficult.
How it Affects You
As much power and influence as the U.S. and Russia have, an agreement that doesn’t include Ukraine will probably not stop the war. Ukraine has adapted to a new style of fighting where home made drones do most of the killing, so they are less reliant on U.S. military supplies than they were in 2022. That means even if the U.S. pulls its support, with supplies from Europe Ukraine could keep fighting a long time.
