Trump Administration Increases Pressure on Iran to Make a Nuclear Deal
Trump Administration threatens Iran with military action if Tehran doesn’t resume nuclear program negotiations.

What Happened?
The Trump Administration ratcheted up its rhetoric against Iran this week, warning the Iranian regime that ‘time was running out’ to make a new nuclear deal. At the same time, an increasing number of American warships have been steadily building up in the Persian Gulf.
Iranian leaders in Tehran responded by saying their armed forces were on their highest alert, and they threatened ‘total war’ with the United States if Iran is attacked.
Iran has also continued to insist its nuclear program is for peaceful energy purposes only and not for making weapons.
Why it Matters
The increasing rhetoric and buildup of forces in the Persian Gulf by the Trump Administration comes after President Trump promised Iranians that ‘help was on the way.’ He then changed his mind by saying he had it on good authority that the Iranian regime had stopped killing protestors.
According to several international organizations who have people on the ground in Iran, the Iranian regime has killed between ten and twenty-five thousand civilians and continues to do so with impunity.

Massive, nationwide protests have rocked Iran in the past several weeks, representing the largest such demonstrations since the current regime in Tehran came to power in 1979, also by a popular uprising.
Iran’s leaders have responded with armed force, shooting protestors in mass numbers not only in Tehran, but across the country. Iran’s leaders acknowledge thousands have been killed, although exact numbers are difficult to come by due to the communications blackout currently being imposed in Iran.
The Trump Administration has been short on specifics when it comes to Iran’s nuclear program, but the concern is that the regime in Tehran is trying to rebuild its nuclear program after it was severely damaged by U.S. airstrikes. At a minimum, the Trump Administration has demanded Iran resume negotiations over its nuclear program, demands Tehran has thus far rejected.
With the continued buildup of American warships in the Persian Gulf and the successful U.S. airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities, the threat of more military action is a credible one.
It is also likely the Iranian regime has had its hands full dealing with a nationwide popular uprising, which means most of its time and resources have been devoted to that crisis. Because Tehran has been so busy dealing with the uprising, it has probably had less time to spend on the nuclear program or potential negotiations with the United States.
Furthermore, being seen as bowing to American demands could make the regime look weaker, the opposite of what Tehran is trying to do at this moment.
How it Affects You
Recent calls in Washington, D.C., to use military force to overthrow the current regime in Iran are misguided. A few airstrikes or even several weeks of airstrikes may not be enough to topple the ruling regime in Tehran. If the regime is overthrown by the Iranian people without external help, it would have much more legitimacy.
