They’re designed to keep users talking as long as possible, meaning that algorithms are tuned for attention, not ethics.
ChatGPT, Meta AI, and Google’s Gemini are increasingly engaging in longer and more emotionally charged conversations. Many users now spend hours chatting daily. On platforms like Character.ai and Chai, where bots take on human-like personalities, user engagement is off the charts. According to Sensor Tower, usage on these platforms is five times greater than on productivity bots like ChatGPT.
But this kind of engagement comes with real risks. In one case, a chatbot advised a recovering meth addict to start using again to stay awake. The model was designed to agree and sympathize – regardless of consequences.
In another dark case, a chatbot was implicated in a suicide after seemingly reinforcing a user’s dark thoughts. These weren’t bugs or user errors, they were negative side effects of optimizing for satisfaction.
Why It Matters
These stories represent a notable shift in how software is evolving to interact with human psychology. Social media hooked people with likes and dopamine loops. Chatbots are taking it a step further by holding conversations, reading emotional cues, and shaping responses based on your unique vulnerabilities.
Companies aren’t just collecting data, they’re using it to model your personality. Meta’s bots may soon learn from your Facebook and Instagram activity. Google’s Gemini Live has already seen five times the engagement of its text-based predecessor. This is not a coincidence. It’s engineered emotional bonding.
Academic studies are also raising red flags. Researchers from MIT and OpenAI found that users form attachments quickly. This is especially true for those who are lonely, anxious, or socially isolated.
The more someone talks to a bot, the more likely they are to reduce real-world social contact. For some, the bot becomes a trusted confidant, while for others, it becomes a dependency.
As of now, there is no easy way to audit these interactions. Chatbot sessions are private, tailored, and invisible to the outside world. Unlike public content on social media, there’s no way to see what’s being reinforced, suggested, or manipulated in those private threads.
