What Happened?
Federal and Texas officials confirmed Wednesday that New World screwworm had infected a wild elk in Pecos County, marking the first known U.S. wildlife case during the current outbreak. The discovery follows infections in cattle in Texas and New Mexico earlier this year.
A hunter harvested a female elk in which the parasite was found. Texas Parks and Wildlife officials credited cooperation between hunters, landowners and agency biologists with identifying and confirming the infestation. Screwworm larvae consume living tissue in warm-blooded animals. Their hosts can include livestock, wildlife, and pets. Officials urged people outdoors to watch for visible larvae, open wounds and animals showing unusual weakness or distress, and to report suspected cases to wildlife biologists.
The detection extends surveillance beyond managed herds as authorities assess the outbreak’s reach. Wildlife infections have occurred before: an outbreak involving deer in the Florida Keys was eradicated in 2017. Officials are now monitoring Texas wildlife for additional cases to determine the extent of transmission.
Why It Matters
The parasite spreading to wildlife makes containment substantially harder, as officials can't monitor infected animals as readily as cattle in a managed herd. Detecting elk leaves officials with a bigger surveillance problem: finding cases across open country before the extent of transmission is clear…
Morgan Stanley Calls This a $9T Opportunity
If Morgan Stanley’s right, the flying car industry will grow 185,850% by 2050. In fact, they say it will reach $9 trillion in size, more than twice as valuable as today’s global car market.*
And 5,500+ investors believe Doroni will lead the charge. While competitors chase air fleets and taxis, Doroni’s H1-X aircraft is designed for everyday life. It plugs in and charges like an EV, fits in a two-car garage, and requires just 25 hours of training to pilot.
And while others are peddling blueprints and renderings, Doroni just unveiled a full-scale showroom prototype in March. It was so impressive, FOX Business called it the “‘flying car’ set to revolutionize air travel.”
600+ people have already reserved one, good for $240M in potential revenue for Doroni. And you can claim an early-stage stake in Doroni at $3.30/share today. But hurry. Invest in Doroni before tonight’s 11:59pm ET deadline.
The timing is unwelcome for cattle producers already operating with tight supplies, as further infections will only exacerbate treatment costs and disrupt operations. This puts pressure on an industry whose limited capacity already complicates efforts to lower beef prices. Hunters and landowners consequently become an important source of information. The Pecos County case demonstrates how observations outside routine livestock inspections can reveal infections authorities might otherwise miss.
While one confirmed elk does not establish a widespread wildlife outbreak, it undermines any assumption that ranch-confined surveillance can describe the whole problem. Florida’s earlier eradication offers confidence, but that success does not show how far this outbreak has spread or how much work containment in Texas will ultimately require of authorities.
How It Affects You
An outbreak would consume resources that producers would otherwise devote to maintaining or expanding herds. With cattle supplies already tight, money spent managing disease adds costs without putting more beef on the market. Hunters have a more direct role. The Pecos County detection came from a harvested elk, showing how routine field activity can reveal information livestock monitoring can't. Reporting suspect infestations gives wildlife officials a chance to investigate while the evidence is still useful.
Any future cases will help officials better understand the scale of the response, as scattered detections and transmission present different demands on both agency budgets and landowners themselves. Treating either outcome as established would obscure the uncertainty officials now need to resolve.
Successful containment creates awkward public accounting, as the expenditure is visible while the losses it prevents are not, making early intervention easy to question and delay easy to rationalize. By the time widespread damage provides an indisputable case for spending, the chance to contain it cheaply may have passed.
