Russia Targets Apartment Block in Kyiv, Killing at Least 15 in Massive Attack

Russia's military has carried out its latest attack on Ukraine's capital, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 100 as foreign leaders threaten additional sanctions.

What Happened?

Russian officials have carried out a massive missile and drone attack against Ukraine, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 100.

According to reports, at least 124 people were injured after Russia's launched attack targeted a multi-story residential building.

Ukraine's interior minister said that Kyiv had been hit by 440 drones and 32 missiles in one of the biggest attacks on the capital since the start of Russia's full-scale war.

A 62-year-old U.S. citizen was also among those killed in Russia's attack.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it 'one of the most horrific attacks' that Kyiv has faced.

'The Russians destroyed an entire section of the apartment block. In total, buildings in eight districts of Kyiv have been damaged,' Zelenskyy said Tuesday on social platform X. 'Such attacks are pure terrorism.'

Zelenskyy reiterated calls to its European allies and the U.S. that it 'must finally respond' to Moscow's actions he deemed as terroristic.

'(Vladimir) Putin does this solely because he can afford to continue the war. He wants the war to go on. It is wrong when the powerful of this world turn a blind eye to it,' Zelenskyy added.

The Ukrainian leader stated his team has been in contact with all its partners on every level to ensure an appropriate response.

Russia said it downed 203 Ukrainian drones over 10 Russian regions between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, The Associated Press reported.

Why it Matters

Russia has ramped up its airborne attacks in recent weeks targeting different parts of Ukraine.

Nearly 500 drones and 20 various types of missiles were launched last week by Russia's military, mainly targeting central and western areas.

The attack was labeled the biggest overnight drone barrage of the war in its fourth year.

Russia's escalation comes after two rounds of direct peace talks failed to make progress for a ceasefire.

The two countries had successfully conducted rounds of prisoner exchanges, concluding negotiations held in Istanbul, Turkey.

But it has not stopped the relentless efforts carried out by Russian forces.

President Donald Trump had warned of Putin’s retaliation against attacks that Ukraine had carried out that will reportedly cost the Kremlin as much as $7 billion in total damages.

The situation for Zelenskyy is critical as he tries to prevent Ukraine from being sidelined in international diplomacy.

Trump and Zelenskyy were scheduled to meet Tuesday during Canada's G7 summit before Trump's early departure amid Middle East tensions between Israel and Iran.

Before leaving, Trump criticized the summit by pointing out it used to include Russian leadership.

'The G7 used to be the G8. Barack Obama and a person named [former Canadian Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau didn’t want to have Russia in,' Trump told reporters. 'I would say that was a mistake because I think you wouldn’t have a war right now if you had Russia in.'

How it Affects You

In addition to trade tariff concerns, the ongoing war in Kyiv could become a slightly distant priority for the U.S.

Ukraine also being short-handed on its front line provides Russia with the opportunity to capitalize on these weaknesses.

The U.K. and its allies are reportedly expected to announce more sanctions against Russia as many wait for the U.S. to join.

Trump's previous suggestion to let both countries 'fight for a while' has taken a neutral approach in his hopes of brokering an unconditional ceasefire.

It reflects that additional assistance, particularly from the U.S., remains complicated for Ukraine as current war efforts intensify.
