Russia Accuses Ukraine of Targeting Residence of Vladimir Putin
Russian Foreign Minister accuses Ukraine of targeting a residence of President Putin with a drone attack in Novgorod.

What Happened?
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack against one of the residences used by President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod region last week. Former Russian President and current Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev said the attack represented an attempt by Ukraine to derail the current peace negotiations.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy rejected the allegations of an assassination attempt on President Putin as ‘another Russian lie.’ Ukraine’s Foreign Minister said that Russia has presented no evidence of such an attack because there isn’t any, and ‘no such attack happened.’
Why it Matters
No physical or forensic evidence has been made public to substantiate the alleged attempt on Mr. Putin’s life in Novgorod. Since Ukraine has already conducted several drone strikes inside Russia, it is likely that if they were behind such an attack, they would want to claim responsibility for it because it could be used as a rallying cry for Ukrainian forces. While Ukraine has nothing to gain from denying such an attack, Russia stands to gain an exit from peace negotiations they aren’t really interested in anyway by making it up.

Russia’s lack of interest in the peace negotiations can be seen in the intensifying attacks Russian forces launched on Ukraine during the most recent round of talks. By continuing attacks and refusing to even entertain the notion of a demilitarized zone in eastern Ukraine, Russia’s position remains unchanged since 2022. Russia has demonstrated a desire to seize Ukrainian territory by force and has given no indications they will accept any other outcome. Russia appears to view peace talks as useful only to undercut U.S. support for Ukraine.
After the accusations of the alleged assassination attempt on Mr. Putin, Mr. Medvedev and other Russian officials accused Ukraine of trying to derail the peace process, but it is more likely Russia is trying to do that itself by fabricating the story. The reason is simple. When Russia perceives that peace talks between the U.S. and Ukraine are getting too friendly, they look for a way to make U.S. President Trump angry again and put some distance between him and Mr. Zelenskyy.
According to the Trump Administration, President Trump reacted with ‘anger and surprise’ at the alleged attack on Mr. Putin’s residence. It is also possible there was an attack, but Ukraine wasn’t responsible for it. Mr. Putin has plenty of domestic enemies at home in Russia, many of whom possess the means and motive to carry out such an attack.
How it Affects You
Peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine had already stalled before the most recent Russian accusations, and the reason the peace talks weren’t making progress was because the core issue of the conflict remains unresolved. Both Russia and Ukraine want to control the same territory in eastern Ukraine, and until one side gives up control, the war is likely to continue.
