Remains of Last Israeli Hostage Taken by Hamas Returned to Israel
Remains of the last Israeli hostage taken by Hamas in October 2023 returned to Israel.

What Happened?
The Israeli government confirmed on Monday the remains of the last hostage taken by Hamas in 2023 have been returned to Israel. Israel’s military issued a statement saying the remains of Ran Gvili, a former police officer, had been forensically identified and the family of the deceased had been notified.
According to the Hostages and Families Forum, ‘Ran Gvili, the last remaining hostage in Gaza, has been brought home. First to enter, last to leave.’ Israeli President Isaac Herzog said, ‘An entire nation prayed and waited for this moment, now the circle is closed.’
Why it Matters
The return of the last remaining hostage in Gaza brings to a close a three-year-long ordeal for the nation of Israel. In October 2023 Hamas attacked Israel, killing over one thousand civilians and taking two hundred and fifty hostages.
The attack triggered a massive military response from Israel, which led to the destruction of much of the Gaza Strip and several regional clashes between Israel and the U.S. and militant proxies of Iran. A fragile ceasefire remains in place between Hamas and Israel, though both sides have violated it several times.

Since Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023, the top demand from the Israeli public has been the return of all hostages. The forceful kidnapping of two hundred and fifty Israelis represented one of the largest hostage situations in world history. For Hamas, the hostages were viewed as leverage against Israel, though it clearly failed to deter Israel from launching military attacks against Gaza. Of the total hostages taken, one hundred and thirty were returned to Israel alive.
Israel also announced that the Rafah border crossing with Egypt would be reopened due to the return of the last remaining hostage. Israel had promised to keep the strategic crossing closed until all the hostages or their remains had been returned. The opening was not without conditions, as Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office said that the opening was for pedestrians only and anyone moving through the crossing was subject to inspection by the Israeli Defense Force.
Phase two of the peace plan in Gaza has yet to formally begin, but the return of the last hostage may help bring about the launch of the next step in the overall peace agreement. Hamas has still not disarmed, though it has tentatively agreed to relinquish power over the day-to-day governance of Gaza.
How it Affects You
The return of the last Israeli hostage is more than just symbolic. With the hostages returned, it is unlikely the Israeli public would support additional large-scale combat operations against Gaza unless there is another attack by Hamas or an Iranian proxy. Gaza is now a step closer to beginning a new post war future, though several key issues remain unresolved, and the current ceasefire remains fragile.
