Senior Pentagon officials have publicly acknowledged that the United States operates weapons in Earth’s orbit, marking the clearest admission yet of an American orbital arsenal. Space Force chief Douglas Schiess said personnel operate systems that can defend U.S. forces from attacks enabled through space.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink separately confirmed that the country possesses on-orbit space-control weapons designed to counter hostile actions. Neither official identified the systems nor explained how they work. The disclosures are intended to strengthen deterrence as China and Russia expand their ability to disrupt or attack satellites.

Possible orbital weapons include systems that jam satellite signals, blind sensors with lasers, or physically approach and manipulate another spacecraft. China demonstrated its ability to grapple and move a satellite in orbit in 2022.

The United States also completed its largest orbital military exercise, Apollo Maneuvers, involving satellites across multiple orbits and participation from allied governments and commercial companies. U.S. officials said the growing arsenal will expand through disciplined and responsible decisions in the coming years.

Satellites are imperative tools for the U.S. military that do everything from guiding missiles to collecting intelligence and aiding troop navigation while in hostile territory. Losing these systems during a conflict could cripple American forces, leaving them unable to communicate or respond effectively. It’s a warning that seems specifically directed at China, long considered the U.S.’ biggest space competitor. Beijing has developed maneuverable spacecraft and demonstrated technology that can move other satellites. Russia has also invested in systems designed to interfere with military and civilian space assets, but by all accounts is lagging behind the U.S. and China.

While the Pentagon confirmed America’s orbital arsenal, for obvious reasons it did not lay all its cards on the table. Without knowing what the American systems can do, China and Russia are almost certain to plan for the worst contingencies and ramp up their own arsenals.

With America’s military capability already stretched thin from both the conflict in Iran and supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia, the Pentagon walks a narrow line between explaining enough about its doctrine and limits to strengthen deterrence without exposing technical secrets. Orbital weapons should make attacks less likely, not encourage adversaries to strike first in space.

While no conflict has unfolded in space yet, that doesn't mean there shouldn't be defenses if one does. America’s biggest adversaries certainly are. If satellites were to go down, it would affect civilian life as well, as communications would be cut off, flights would be severely delayed, and accurate weather predictions would be hampered.

American orbital weapons help protect these services by deterring potential attacks and making actual attacks harder, if not inconceivable.
