Open AI Launches Chat GPT 5, the Companies Newest AI Model

What Happened?

Open AI released Chat GPT 5, the organization’s newest AI model which the company hails as its first unified AI program. According to Open AI’s website Chat GPT 5 is ‘Our smartest, fastest, most useful model yet, with built-in thinking that puts expert-level intelligence in everyone’s hands.’

According to TechCrunch the new Chat GPT 5 model ‘combines the reasoning abilities of Open AI’s o-series of models with the fast responses of its GPT series.’ On Open AI’s website there is a link for users who want to try Chat GPT 5 for free.

Why it Matters

Open AI CEO Sam Altman has referred to Chat GPT 5 as a ‘Manhattan level-project,’ though that type of description is itself likely part of the marketing plan to draw attention and attract new users to the program. A key difference between Chat GPT 4 and 5 is that four could provide users with answers to complex questions but not perform most tasks. By contrast, Chat GPT 5 can perform a wide range of tasks for users.

AI that can perform tasks such as scheduling meetings, generating power point presentations, and making reservations is referred to as agentic AI, because it has agency. Agency means the ability to operate independently of direct human control. For example, with agentic AI, you can instruct the AI to create a presentation for you, and it can do that even after you are no longer online. With earlier models, once the user signs off the program stops working for that user. 

In addition to being able to perform tasks for human users, Chat GPT 5 also can provide quick answers when needed and recognize when more complex questions call for a deep dive which can take longer. The program can determine whether to answer quickly or not based on the questions themselves, so the user doesn’t have to specify if they are looking for a quick answer or not.

Since its launch in 2022, Chat GPT has grown to nearly 700 million users per week, which is roughly ten percent of the entire human population. According to Open AI’s website, the new Chat GPT 5 offers frontier-level performance around coding. CEO Sam Altman said the model specifically excels at spinning up entire software applications on demand, in what’s become known as ‘vibe coding.’

Critics worry programs like Chat GPT could reduce the number of people employed in fields like customer service. And lead to a reduction in critical thinking skills by humans who use the AI to answer questions instead of thinking about how to find answers on their own.

How it Affects You

The amount people can use Chat GPT 5 depends on the subscription level. Free users have limits on how much they can ask it to do, while higher paying subscribers have access to increased functions and more frequent use. If the new Chat GPT 5 can perform as advertised, it could increase the number of users worldwide and potentially pull users away from older platforms like Google.
