Nine Killed in Canada’s Deadliest Mass Shooting in Decades

Nine killed and twenty-five wounded in one of Canada’s worst mass shootings in decades.

What Happened?

Royal Canadian Mounted Police said ten people were killed and twenty-five wounded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, making the incident one of Canada’s worst mass shootings ever.

Police also said the shooter was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A video posted online showed students walking out of the school with their hands raised as police vehicles surrounded the building while a helicopter could be seen overhead.

Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka said it was ‘devastating’ to find out how many had died in the community of Tumbler Ridge, which he characterized as one ‘big family.’

Why it Matters

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, but the incident at Tumbler Ridge is an unfortunate reminder they can happen anywhere. Canada has strict gun control laws, and the number of firearm related deaths per year is far lower than the same totals for the United States.

Tumbler Ridge is located in the Canadian Rockies more than six hundred miles northeast of Vancouver, near the provincial border with Alberta. The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students from Grades 7 to 12.

The town has a population of just two thousand seven hundred. Mass shootings can happen in small towns or large urban areas, though most take place in areas with larger populations.

Thus far, Canadian police have not indicated if they know the motive behind the shooting. In the past several years, a new kind of motive has emerged that is often mistakenly called political or terroristic.

Nihilistic motives have been on the rise, and this type of motive is when the shooter sees themselves as carrying out a war against humanity, not serving any specific political or religious agenda. The last school shooting in Minneapolis is believed to fit into this category. Nihilistic shooters often leave manifestos or online commentary indicating their motives.

Current reports indicate Canadian authorities responded quickly to the incident, arriving on the scene within minutes. On average, mass shootings are over in less than five minutes, making it very difficult for law enforcement or even armed bystanders to prevent them from taking lives once the shooter opens fire.

Most active shooters don’t bring enough ammunition for a prolonged attack, which is the reason why so many end in just minutes. There have been some that lasted longer, but on the whole, active shooter attacks are relatively brief in terms of time.

How it Affects You

Schools and other public facilities in Canada and worldwide will likely tighten their security measures in the next few days because there have been occasions where copycat shooters will piggyback on a recent attack like the one at Tumbler Ridge.

With the shooter dead at the scene, it will likely take time for investigators to piece together exactly what happened and why.
