What Happened?

Tech giant Meta is currently building one of the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in rural northeastern Louisiana, a project known as Hyperion. Located in Richland Parish between the towns of Rayville and Delhi, the enormous facility is designed to provide the computing power necessary to train and operate the next generation of advanced AI systems.

Meta initially valued the project at $10 billion, but current estimates indicate the project could ultimately cost $200 billion in total. The facility covers approximately 2,250 acres and is expected to include more than 4 million square feet of buildings dedicated to servers, networking equipment, cooling systems, and AI processing hardware.

Anna Constantin of The Next Web reported that Meta purchased an additional 1,400 acres earlier this year, bringing the total campus to roughly four times the size of Manhattan’s Central Park. The Hyperion campus is designed to deliver 5 gigawatts of computational power, with an additional 2.5 gigawatts allocated to campus support systems, cooling, and infrastructure.

Despite resistance from some communities slated to host massive AI data centers like Hyperion, there are also supporters. State leaders in Louisiana promoted Hyperion as a transformational investment that could create thousands of construction jobs and stimulate economic growth in a region that has historically struggled with poverty and declining agricultural activity. At peak construction, more than 5,000 workers may be employed on-site, although permanent staffing levels will likely be much smaller once operations begin.

Critics argue that the project’s enormous energy needs could strain Louisiana’s electrical grid and increase dependence on fossil fuels. Utility company Entergy Louisiana has announced plans for multiple new natural gas power plants to support the facility.

According to Ned Randolph of the Louisiana Illuminator, environmental groups and residents have expressed concerns about pollution, water use, rising housing costs, and the large tax incentives granted to Meta. Some reports estimate the company could receive billions of dollars in tax breaks connected to the project.

Massive data center construction projects like Meta’s Hyperion indicate that tech companies are continuing to bet big on the long-term viability of AI. These types of facilities are being built to last for decades, suggesting that AI could become a permanent part of human social and economic systems. 

Meta’s Hyperion data center also proves AI is no longer just software. AI now depends on vast physical infrastructure involving land, energy production, water resources, supply chains, and government policy.
