Large Lithium Deposits Located in the Appalachian Mountains

New report by the U.S. Geological Survey finds massive lithium deposits in the Appalachian Mountains.

What Happened?

According to a new study by the United States Geological Survey, there are roughly 2.3 million metric tons of lithium oxide located in pegmatite formations spread across areas of the eastern United States. Much of that material is thought to lie beneath the mountains of North and South Carolina, while additional deposits are estimated to exist under parts of western Maine and New Hampshire.

The data from the original study suggests the Appalachian deposits could support production of about 500 billion cellphones, along with billions of laptops and tablets, or enough batteries to power roughly 130 million electric vehicles if the lithium sources can be extracted commercially.

Why it Matters

The potential significance of the newly discovered Appalachian lithium deposits can be found in supply chain security. Much of the world’s lithium production is concentrated in Chile, Australia, and China.

This geographic concentration creates economic vulnerabilities for the United States, particularly as geopolitical tensions and trade competition intensify. Domestic lithium reserves could reduce reliance on foreign sources, strengthening national security and ensuring a more stable supply for American manufacturers.

Why Apple’s latest move has #1 software company’s investors excited

Apple just enabled Starlink satellite support to T-Mobile iPhones.

One of the biggest potential winners from global satellite coverage?

Just about everything Elon touches turns to gold:

• SpaceX projected IPO at $1.75T
• Tesla up by over 30,000% since IPO
• And now - iPhone’s get satellite access

But while Wall Street focuses on Apple, Mode Mobile is quietly positioned to capitalize on this global satellite revolution.

Their EarnPhone technology already:

• Reaches 490M+ users worldwide
• Helped those users save and earn over $1 billion
• Grew revenue 32,481%

And that was before global satellite coverage.

With SpaceX eliminating "dead zones," Mode's earning technology can reach 3B+ unbanked people globally in rural populations worldwide.

We’re talking about emerging markets with no infrastructure.

Right now, you can still invest at $0.50/share.

Over 59,000 shareholders have already claimed their shares and they’ve just secured the $MODE ticker from Nasdaq. The time to invest is now, before any potential IPO.*

For the tech industry, the implications are potentially far reaching. Lithium-ion batteries are foundational to modern electronics and are especially crucial for the rapid expansion of electric vehicles.

Companies such as Tesla and Apple depend on consistent access to battery materials to sustain production and innovation. A domestic lithium supply could lower costs, reduce exposure to international price fluctuations, and encourage further investment in battery technology research and development.

The Appalachian region itself could experience significant economic revitalization. Historically associated with coal mining and heavy industry, many parts of Appalachia have faced economic decline as those sectors contracted.

Lithium extraction could create new jobs in mining, processing, and related infrastructure, offering a pathway toward economic diversification. Unlike traditional fossil fuel industries, lithium mining is tied to the growing clean energy economy, potentially aligning regional development with broader environmental goals.

Communities in the Appalachian region will likely be skeptical about the potential ability of lithium mining to revitalize their region. Poverty has proven to be persistent in the Appalachian region and there have been numerous government and private sector promises to find a cure in the past half century, and none of the promises have come true.

To gain buy-in from local communities, which would be essential for long-term operations, clear examples of the benefits of this type of mining would have to be provided or demonstrated.

How it Affects You

Appalachians have been promised transformative economic programs before, and few of those delivered lasting results. The potential for lithium mining could be helped by the massive growth of the technology sector, which is undergoing another burst of expansion due to the rise of artificial intelligence.

The key will likely be how difficult lithium deposits are to extract. If the deposits are located in easy to get to areas, then the economics of mining will make large scale operations more likely. If the cost of extraction is too high because the deposits are hard to reach, the development of those resources may be more limited.
