King Charles Focuses on Shared History and Values Between the U.S. and Britain
King Charles III addresses Congress and focuses on the shared history between the U.S. and U.K.

What Happened?
King Charles III, the current head of state for Great Britain, gave a thirty-minute address to the U.S. Congress on Tuesday. While the king has little formal power in the government of the United Kingdom, he remains a well-known and influential member of the international community. And during his address to Congress, he covered a wide range of topics, most of which focused on the common history between the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
Of the United States and United Kingdom, King Charles said, ‘the destinies of our nations are interlinked.’ Though King Charles has visited Washington, D.C., several times, this was his first address to the U.S. Congress.
Why it Matters
The relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom has been strong since the Second World War, but recently that partnership has been under strain. Disagreements between Britain and the U.S. over the role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in global affairs have tarnished relations. European nations, including Britain, have been strong advocates for NATO action to defend Ukraine, while the Trump Administration has at times accused NATO countries of not spending enough money on defense.

Charles III, whose full name is Charles Philip Arthur George, was born in 1948 to Queen Elizabeth II. Charles served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, earning aviator wings in 1971. Charles became king upon his mother's death in 2022. At seventy-three, he was the oldest person to accede to the British throne, after having been the longest-serving heir apparent and Prince of Wales in British history.
His speech to Congress focused largely on historical themes, including the unique relationship between Britain and the United States. The two countries have been close allies since the end of World War II, when they fought together to defeat Nazi Germany. Charles avoided any direct discussion of American politics during his address. But he did touch on several themes, such as the need for executive power to have constraints and for the U.S. to continue to lead efforts to find solutions to the problems facing the world today.
The popularity of the British monarchy in the United States rose significantly after the death of Princess Diana in 1997. She was a popular figure with the American public, and her death captured the attention of the world, dominating U.S. news headlines for months. Charles was married to Diana for over a decade, and his popularity today with the American public is likely a legacy of that marriage.
How it Affects You
During his speech, Charles gave the impression he believes the unique relationship between the U.S. and Britain will endure despite the current disagreements between them. Britain and the U.S. have weathered rough patches in their relationship before, especially during the Suez Canal crisis of the 1950s. Britain is a key U.S. ally in Europe, and the transatlantic partnership between them is the cornerstone of the NATO alliance.
