Israel’s Security Cabinet Approves Plan for Full Takeover of Gaza

Israel’s cabinet approves Netanyahu’s plan for a full military takeover of the Gaza Strip.

What Happened?

Israel’s security cabinet approved Prime Minister Netanyahu’s plan for a full takeover of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli military. Mr. Netanyahu’s office issued a statement saying, ‘The IDF will prepare for taking control of Gaza City while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones.’

Though the Trump Administration did not immediately respond to Israel’s decision, President Trump has previously said the decision of whether or not to takeover Gaza was ‘up to Israel.’  Israeli spokesman said the plan would take place in phases, although they did not indicate when the new plan would commence.

Why it Matters

The planned takeover of Gaza is a significant shift for Israel’s strategy and a major expansion of military operations against Hamas. While Israel has pushed back against claims it bears responsibility for famine in Gaza, once the full-scale takeover has been completed, it will no longer be able to put blame on the United Nations for widespread hunger in Gaza. By taking over the Gaza Strip Israel will assume primary responsibility for what happens there.

From a military perspective the takeover of Gaza will present a considerable logistical challenge to Israel’s military. The number of troops deployed to the Gaza Strip will have to be increased, as will the number of supplies they need to operate. The troop increases may necessitate the calling up of more reservists by the IDF, which could in turn exacerbate internal political divisions in Israel over how the war is being fought.

To date Israel’s military has been overwhelmingly successful against a range of enemies including Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthi in Yemen and Iran. Those successes were almost all accomplished by Israel’s Air Force, which inflicted substantial damage on its enemies without suffering any losses.

By contrast the takeover of Gaza will be a ground operation, and it will shift the current war from one fought mainly in the skies to one that takes place on the ground. Hamas and its allies have no air force, but they do have ground forces which could inflict Israeli casualties.

For the Palestinians the takeover will likely mean continued privations and forced relocations as more people get crowded into fewer parts of the Gaza Strip. The parts that have been destroyed are uninhabitable and those occupied by Hamas will be targets, which means much of the Palestinian civilian population will be pushed into less than half the total land area of the original Gaza Strip.

How it Affects You

Israel’s pending takeover of Gaza will require more resources which means Israel will likely ask the United States for more military aid to meet the new demands. At least some of that will likely take place in 2026 during mid-term elections, which means U.S. aid to Israel could become a major campaign issue.
