Israel Invades Southern Lebanon in Dramatic Escalation
Israeli ground forces launch invasion of southern Lebanon in dramatic escalation of the war with Iran.

What Happened?
Israel has launched a ground invasion of southern Lebanon, marking a dramatic escalation in the Iran War, which continues to spread throughout the Middle East.
Israeli troops and tanks moved across the border of Lebanon following a series of rocket attacks from Hezbollah into northern Israel. The government of Lebanon, for the first time, banned military activities by Hezbollah and demanded that the Iranian-backed terrorist group lay down its arms.
Hezbollah has refused calls to disarm and has vowed to continue retaliation against Israel for the killing of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, ‘Hezbollah made a very big mistake when it attacked us.’
Why it Matters
The crossing of the Lebanese border by Israeli ground forces marks the first use of ground forces in the Iran War. By banning Hezbollah’s militant activities, the government of Lebanon has essentially given Hezbollah an ultimatum, although Lebanon’s own military has not yet engaged the Iranian-backed terrorist group in combat.
With Iran’s Supreme Leader dead and its government scattered, both Israel and Lebanon appear to believe Hezbollah no longer has Iranian support and is vulnerable to attack.
Israel has fought Hezbollah in Lebanon before, most recently in 2006 and in a more limited fashion in 2024. Hezbollah, which means ‘Party of God,’ is funded and equipped by Iran and operates much like a parallel government inside Lebanon.
Many Lebanese resent Hezbollah’s presence, but because the group has been well armed and financed, they have been unable to dislodge it from Lebanon’s soil. Without Iranian backing, Hezbollah will be cut off from funds and supplies, which means its fighters are more vulnerable to attack than they’ve ever been.
Hezbollah’s destruction is the main objective of Israel’s ground operation in southern Lebanon. But Hezbollah will probably not go quietly or easily, because even without Iranian resupply, the group still possess its own well-equipped and highly fanatical army.
If Lebanon and Israel both attack Hezbollah, the group can be destroyed and potentially driven from Lebanese soil, which would be a historic achievement. Hezbollah will likely try to cause as much death and destruction as it possibly can, even if facing certain defeat.
Even if Hezbollah cannot be completely destroyed, Israel would consider the operation a success if they were able to bolster the security of their northern region. A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) issued a public statement saying, ‘The IDF is working to create an additional layer of security for residents of northern Israel.’
How it Affects You
The cross-border attack by Israel into Lebanon is a clear escalation and intensification of the current conflict engulfing the Middle East. If Israel and Lebanon can destroy Hezbollah, it would be a major victory, but the terrorist organization may lash out with its most violent attacks yet if it fears its end is near.
