Israel and Hamas Agree to First Phase of a Ceasefire Deal

Israel and Hamas agree to new ceasefire deal after extensive negotiations in Egypt.

What Happened?

After negotiators met in Egypt this weekend, Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a new ceasefire deal, which is formally to begin Thursday. Full details of the deal have yet to be made public, but initial reports indicate the deal will bring an initial ceasefire, a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the release of all remaining Israeli hostages being held by Hamas.

Hamas and Israel are expected to officially sign the agreement on Thursday, and the hostage release would begin this weekend.

Why it Matters

The war between Israel and Hamas has been ongoing for two years, and several other attempts have been made to broker a permanent end to the conflict. None of those initial deals held, and this one, despite the outpouring of support in Gaza and Israel, remains tentative. If either side continues hostilities, which they did during the last round of negotiations, the deal could still fall apart.

Elon Musk: “Robots Will…Do Everything Better”

That’s what Elon says. And it’s already happening.

Just look at fast food. Miso Robotics is already delivering an AI-powered fry-cooking robot called Flippy that can cook perfectly and never calls in sick.*

As restaurants grapple with 144% labor turnover rates and $20/hour minimum wages, it’s no surprise brands like White Castle are turning to Miso. Now, after selling out the first run of its first fully commercial robot in one week, Miso’s scaling production to 100,000+ US fast food locations in need.

In fact, with its US-based manufacturing ramping up now, Miso is currently finalizing its latest major brand partnership and other significant announcements.

But if the deal remains intact, the agreement is large enough that it could bring an end to the brutal conflict between Hamas and Israel. Key questions remain unanswered, but the initial reports indicate that under the terms of the deal, Hamas will be at least partially disarmed, and Gaza will be placed under the supervision of an international administration. In addition to the release of all remaining Israeli hostages, Israel has also reportedly agreed to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails.

After the deal is signed on Thursday, Israel is supposed to pull back from Gaza, then Hamas will have three days to release the remaining hostages. The specifics of the international administration to take control of Gaza have not been made public yet, but it would likely contain some type of provisional government and peacekeeping force, which would keep Hamas out of power in Gaza.

In addition to the hostage release and pullback of Israeli forces from Gaza, a significant surge of humanitarian aid will be delivered to Gaza as part of the new agreement. Gaza has been suffering from a humanitarian crisis, including critical shortages of food and medicine, and the initial delivery of aid is to be part of several more waves of supplies headed to the war-torn enclave.

Celebrations could be seen across Israel and in Gaza when news of the new ceasefire agreement was first announced.

How it Affects You

If the agreement holds, it could usher in a new era for the Gaza Strip and potentially for the Middle East. Rebuilding efforts in Gaza will likely take years to complete, but if successful, they could transform the city and the relations between Israel and the Palestinians.
