Iranian Regime Cracks Down as Nationwide Protests Enter Second Week
Iran’s ruling regime institutes harsh security crackdown against protesters as hundreds are feared dead.

What Happened?
The ruling regime in Iran appears to have instituted a heavy security crackdown against popular protests which have now entered their second week throughout the country. The Center for Human Rights in Iran, which is based in New York but has a number of contacts inside Iran, said it had received eyewitness accounts and credible reports that hundreds of protesters have been killed since the government cut internet access last week.
Iranian authorities have vowed to continue the harsh security crackdown against protesters and warned the United States that any military action taken against Iran would result in immediate retaliation against U.S. forces in the Middle East.
Why it Matters
Because the Iranian regime has cut Internet access and telephone service, getting reliable information from inside Iran has proved difficult since the protests began. International aid and human rights groups who have employees inside Iran have indicated that Iranian security forces have been killing protesters in large numbers, though exact figures have yet to be determined.
The Trump Administration has indicated they are considering the use of military force against the Iranian regime although U.S. military options are limited.

The current protests in Iran are now the largest and longest lasting that country has seen in the past twenty years. What began as a popular protests against rising interest rates and currency devaluation at bazaars in Tehran has spread to nearly every province in Iran and all their major cities.
While Iran's president has struck a more conciliatory tone by promising financial reforms in Iran's banking sector, the Supreme Leader has promised an even harsher security crackdown if the protests do not come to an end immediately.
Iran's armed forces are a separate organization from the secret police and other security agencies who work directly for the Iranian regime. Thus far, the armed forces of Iran appear not to have been involved in any of the actions taken against protesters with secret police and government security agencies taking the lead in trying to subdue the nationwide protests.
Iran's secret police are especially hated in Iran because they often ignore violations by the Iranian elite, allowing them to get away with behavior that would immediately result in the arrest of ordinary Iranians.
How it Affects You
Iran's leaders appear to be using the same tactics they used with previous protests which is to crush the spirit of the protesters with a heavy security crackdown involving mass arrests and summary executions. So long as the security agencies and the armed forces of Iran remain loyal to the regime in Tehran, regime change will be unlikely.
Military action against the Iranian regime by the United States or Israel could have the unintended consequence of generating more support for the regime. External interference in Iranian affairs is what led to the existence of the current Islamist regime in the first place. For regime change in Iran to take place and have a chance of being positive it must come from inside Iran.
