What Happened?
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims to have targeted a U.S. air base in Kuwait, though they did not specify which base they had targeted. A Kuwaiti spokesman said their armed forces had intercepted several missiles and drones, and U.S. Central Command called the IRGC attack ‘a blatant violation of the ceasefire.’ There were no reported casualties from the IRGC attack.
The IRGC attack comes just after U.S. forces had launched strikes against Bandar Abbas, an Iranian naval facility along the coast of the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command said the attacks on Bandar Abbas were defensive in nature.
Why it Matters
The limited exchanges of hostilities between Iran and the U.S. leave the ceasefire agreement hanging in the balance. Though neither the IRGC nor Central Command said which U.S. base had been targeted, the most likely base is Ali Asalem, a major American airbase in Kuwait not far from the Iraqi border. All Iranian missiles and drones appear to have been either intercepted or failed to hit their intended targets…

Both U.S. and Iranian negotiators remain far apart on a lasting peace agreement because neither side is willing to make any concessions to the other. That could change very quickly, but for now, the stalled negotiations remain a source of frustration for the Trump Administration and the government of Iran. The limited exchanges of fire are likely intended to convince the other side to make concessions, so they are in a way part of the negotiations themselves.
For Israel, the conflict between Iran and the U.S. serves a vital strategic purpose. With Iran focused on the United States and not Israel, Israel’s military is free to concentrate more efforts on targeting leaders of Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Israel has continued to intensify its assault on southern Lebanon, an operation which would not be possible if Israel were still engaged in direct hostilities with Iran.
The Iranian attack yesterday demonstrated that Iran still has the capability to threaten its neighbors, which contradicts claims made by the Trump Administration that Iran’s missile capability had been completely destroyed. But the small size of the Iranian missile salvo is a far cry from the hundreds of missiles it had previously launched, suggesting that despite IRGC rhetoric, Iran’s missile forces have been seriously depleted by U.S. and Israeli attacks.
How it Affects You
Though Iran and the United States are frustrated with the lack of progress in peace negotiations, neither one appears eager to resume full-scale hostilities. The conflict could reignite at any time, but the more measured actions taken by both the IRGC and the U.S. suggest both sides are testing the other to see how they will react.
Despite the Trump Administration’s calls for regime change in Iran, they are now negotiating with that same regime, and in so doing, give Tehran more credibility than they would otherwise have had.
