Yesterday, India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down after weeks of demonstrations over alleged leaks involving the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, or NEET, the highly competitive examination used for admission to medical colleges. Approximately two million students were affected when authorities cancelled the May examination and organized a June retest.

Pradhan said he resigned because the unrest at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar protest site and elsewhere threatened to deepen national divisions and distract students from their futures. Protesters demanded Pradhan’s resignation, reforms to the testing system, compensation for families of students who died by suicide after examination scandals, and protection from prosecution for demonstrators.

When allegations of examination leaks intensified, the online campaign became a street movement.

The campaign gained momentum through sit-ins, rallies, and a 26-day hunger strike by activist Sonam Wangchuk. Tensions peaked on July 20 when tens of thousands attempted to march toward Parliament, and police responded with tear gas and baton charges. Images of injured protesters increased public anger, while opposition parties disrupted Parliament and supported the students’ demands. Government promises of special courts and tougher penalties for examination fraud initially failed because protesters wanted a senior official held personally accountable.

India has long tolerated and even encouraged harsh security crackdowns against minority groups like Muslims, but the sight of middle- and upper-class Hindu students being beaten by government police in public will likely leave a lasting impression on India’s public. There is an old saying, what you allow your government to do to others, it will one day do to you. After Pradhan resigned, the government accepted additional demands, announced an examination-reform task force, and introduced legislation proposing stronger punishments for cheating and paper leaks.

The protest’s success could energize a generation that often feels excluded from traditional politics in India. It demonstrated that decentralized organization, humor, and social media can turn youth frustration into national influence. It may also force political parties to address unemployment, educational corruption, and the immense pressure surrounding competitive examinations.

Because hundreds of millions of Indian voters are young, parties that dismiss these concerns could face serious electoral consequences. At the same time, the CJP’s independence from established parties may encourage new forms of civic organization that cross regional, religious, and class divisions.
