Hamas Agrees to New Cease Fire Proposal From Mediators
Hamas said to agree to new cease fire proposal from regional mediators in the Middle East.

What Happened?
Hamas has tentatively agreed to a new proposal from regional mediators for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal with Israel, a source in the Palestinian armed group told the British Broadcast Corporation. The proposal from Egypt and Qatar would be based on a two-stage framework put forward by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff back in June.
Under the terms of the proposal, Hamas would be required to free around half of the 50 remaining Israeli hostages - 20 of whom are believed to be alive - in two groups during an initial 60-day cease fire. There would also be negotiations on a permanent ceasefire. As of Monday, Israel had not commented on the potential agreement.
Why it Matters
Though there is currently no agreement in place to stop the fighting between Israel and Hamas, if Hamas does agree to Witkoff’s proposal, the pressure will then be on Israel to accept the new deal rather than to continue hostilities. The global outcry to stop the war in Gaza has grown stronger, which has also put more pressure on Israel to bring the war to an end.
Israeli protesters demanding a deal to free hostages in Gaza attempted to shut down the country Sunday in one of the largest and fiercest protests in 22 months of war. Nationwide protests rocked Israel as tens of thousands took to the streets. Organizers, representing the families of hostages, asserted that hundreds of thousands of people took part.

‘We live between a terrorist organization that holds our children and a government that refuses to release them for political reasons,’ said Yehuda Cohen, whose son Nimrod is held in Gaza. The combination of growing domestic political pressure and external calls to end the war could force Israel’s government to alter course. The planned takeover of Gaza has not yet begun to be implemented, and a new peace agreement could postpone that takeover.
According to the BBC, Hamas has called for a comprehensive deal that would see the hostages it is holding exchanged for Palestinian prisoners, as well as an end to the war and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. Hamas says it will not disarm unless an independent Palestinian state is created. Recent calls for Hamas to disarm have also been growing in the Middle East, significantly from Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.
How it Affects You
Many Palestinians also want the war to end, which means both Hamas and Israel now face twin pressures from within and from without to bring the war to end. The combination of domestic and external pressure for both sides to cease fighting may finally be enough to convince both sides to bring about a permanent end to the war in Gaza.
