What Happened?
This week, Google announced important changes to its well-known online search box. The new version looks similar to the original, but it's more dynamic and can expand for longer search inputs. With the new search feature, users can also enter videos, pictures, and files for what Google refers to as a multimodal search.
Google is also merging artificial intelligence and traditional web search in a way the company describes as ‘the best of web and the best of AI together.’ Users will now see a small icon on the right side of Google’s search box called ‘AI Mode,’ and if they click on that, Google’s AI program can answer questions similar to the way other AI programs, such as ChatGPT do.
Why it Matters
According to Google’s own blog, the new AI-powered search box represents the biggest transformation of the company’s search engine since Google Search first launched in the late 1990s.
Instead of simply typing keywords into a traditional search bar and receiving a list of blue links, users can now interact with search more like a conversation with an AI assistant. The change is powered by Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models and reflects the growing influence of generative AI on how people access information online…

The shift from a traditional search engine to an AI-driven tool reflects the ongoing transition from the information economy to what is now known as the answer economy. In the information economy, a search tool like Google provides users with a list of links to choose from after they enter a query, then they click on the link most relevant to what they are looking for. But in the answer economy, an AI program gives users one specific answer to their question instead of a list of links.
That change reflects the growing number of internet users who prefer to search the web with AI programs because they can answer specific questions. For example, using a traditional search tool, if you inquired about the best restaurant near you, Google would provide a list of links to restaurants for you to choose from. But with the AI program, users would get a specific restaurant recommended to them, which means they don’t see any of the other links Google would have provided.
Google’s iconic search box is being changed because Google realizes that AI has become the search method of choice for more and more internet users. That’s good news for internet users because they will have another powerful AI tool at their disposal. For businesses, the change also presents a potential problem, because if a business is invisible to the AI programs, most potential customers will never find out about them.
How it Affects You
The new search feature allows for faster audio and visual searches, making it possible to use images or videos as part of the query, a feature not available in Google’s original search box. The risk is if the AI program provides users with inaccurate information, they would have no way to know it if they relied solely on the AI search tool.
