Fighting Along the Thailand Cambodia Border Resumes After Pause

Fighting resumes between Thailand and Cambodia after a six week pause brokered by the Trump administration.

What Happened?

Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia resumed over the weekend after a lengthy pause between the two neighboring countries. Thailand carried out a series of airstrikes against targets in Cambodia, most of which were near the Thai border. According to Thai military officials, the targets hit were Cambodian artillery pieces that could hit facilities inside Thailand.

Thai officials also accused Cambodia’s military of trying to lock onto targets inside Thailand with their artillery pieces, a charge Cambodia denies. The airstrikes represent the worst fighting between Thailand and Cambodia since a brief five-day conflict in July 2025.

Why it Matters

Thailand and Cambodia have a long history of tension and conflict along their border, and the fresh round of fighting threatens to destabilize portions of southeastern Asia. Thailand’s military is much larger and better equipped than Cambodia’s, which would give Thailand a clear advantage if the border conflict escalated into a full-blown war. The chances of full-scale war are still remote, but continued fighting between the two neighbors along their border is a distinct possibility.

Think Google/Facebook-style targeting, but smarter, faster, and built for the next era of AI. Major brands across entertainment, healthcare, and gaming are already using RAD Intel, and the company has backing from Adobe and insiders from Meta, Google, and Amazon.

Here’s the kicker: RAD Intel is still private—but you can invest right now at just $0.85 per share. They’ve already reserved their Nasdaq ticker, $RADI, and the valuation has soared 4900% in just 4 years.*

Both Cambodia and Thailand accused each other of initiating the latest round of conflict, with Thai authorities accusing Cambodia of firing on Thai troops near the border. Cambodia has denied those allegations, and due to the remote and rugged terrain along the border neither the accusations, nor the denials, have been independently confirmed.

During the five-day conflict in July, an estimated three hundred thousand people were displaced from the border region, and if fighting picks back up it is likely that a similar number could be affected this time. Due to the long history of conflict and animosity between Thailand and Cambodia, civilians on both sides fear that their neighbor’s military might target civilians, or at the least not be too worried if civilians get caught in the crossfire. In either case, civilian casualties are a real possibility and the threat of them could drive large numbers of people to flee the region.

Neither side really has the resources for a long term or full-scale war. Cambodia lacks the budget and manpower to sustain such a fight, and Thailand has been beset by internal political crises that have shown little signs of letting up. But the likelihood that smaller scale limited border incidents like the airstrikes this weekend could continue for several days is high.

The resumption of hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia represents an embarrassment for the Trump administration, who had touted the peace deal between the two belligerents.

How it Affects You

‘The renewed fighting risks unraveling the careful work that has gone into stabilizing relations between the two neighbors,’ Malaysia’s prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, said on Monday. That assessment is correct, and in addition to relations between Cambodia and Thailand, a new wave of refugees could create new headaches for other neighboring countries as well.
