Europe Refuses to Get Directly Involved in the War with Iran

European leaders refuse Trump Administration calls to join the war in Iran, leaving Israel and the U.S. to fight alone.

What Happened?

European leaders have steadfastly refused to get directly involved in the war with Iran despite several pleas from the Trump Administration to do so. At a press conference yesterday, German Chancellor Merz said, ‘We would have advised against pursuing this course of action as it has been pursued. Therefore, we have declared that as long as the war continues, we will not participate.’

The war with Iran remains deeply unpopular in Europe, with two-thirds of Europeans voicing opposition to getting involved militarily. The Deputy Prime Minister of Spain added, ‘We are certainly not going to be anybody's vassals.’

Why it Matters

European leaders have interpreted Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to mean they are obligated to come to the aid of the United States if it is attacked. But they are not obligated to join military operations where the United States is the attacker.

The U.S. and Israel launched large-scale airstrikes on Iran beginning on February 28, 2026, so there is no doubt the war was initiated by American and Israeli forces. The absence of direct military involvement from Europe means the U.S. and Israel will have to battle Iran alone.

“The Biggest Gold Mine in History”

That’s what NVIDIA’s CEO said about today’s “once-in-a-generation infrastructure build out” to power AI. And market experts say it could send robotics stocks soaring on a "multi-year supertrend."

But 39k+ investors aren’t waiting for Wall Street. They're backing a private company NVIDIA hand-picked to help build the future of restaurant kitchen AI robots: Miso Robotics.

Miso's AI robots have now logged 200k+ hours automating fry stations for brands like White Castle, frying 5m+ food baskets. With NVIDIA sharpening Miso’s tech, Ecolab investing, and a full-scale manufacturing partner just secured, they’re scaling fast.

Here’s how they’re redefining the $1T fast-food industry:

  • Disruption: Miso’s AI-powered robot, Flippy Fry Station, automates the fry station, one of the most labor-intensive and dangerous roles in the kitchen.

  • Ecosystem: Miso bundles its robot, software, support, and system upgrades into a single monthly fee, unlocking predictable recurring revenue and scalable deployment that can deliver immediate impact to its customers.

Thanks to a brand new manufacturing partnership and $25M of customer financing available to accelerate adoption, 2026 is where Miso plans to take this innovation industry-wide. With 100,000+ target locations in the U.S. alone, this opportunity is immense.*

France had explored the possibility of assembling an international coalition to help ships safely navigate through the Strait of Hormuz, but for the time being at least those plans appear to have been shelved.

Iran has placed mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz and has attacked commercial ships attempting to pass through the area, leading to the effective closure of the strait to commercial shipping. That in turn triggered a global spike in oil prices, which passed $110 dollars per barrel as of Thursday.

The Trump Administration lashed out at U.S. allies verbally, but words have thus far not proven persuasive enough to convince Europe to join the war with Iran. The refusal by Europe to join the war is a political and diplomatic failure for the Trump Administration, though Washington will likely try to continue to pressure Europe to join the war going forward.

The U.S. has been allowed to use bases in Europe as part of the war with Iran, but no European forces are directly involved in the fighting.

While European leaders likely believe the war with Iran is unnecessary, they have another reason not to get directly involved. With the war in Ukraine now in its fourth year, Europe sees Russia as its primary threat. Therefore, European leaders are reluctant to commit their limited military resources to war with Iran because doing so would leave them with less resources to fend off any potential attacks by Russia.

How it Affects You

The decision by Europe not to join the war with Iran has prevented the conflict in the Middle East from spreading to other parts of the globe, at least for now. Iran has now attacked a dozen countries in the Middle East, and if Iranian forces targeted Europe directly, that could change attitudes in Europe and bring European nations into the conflict.
