Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia Call for Hamas to Disarm and End Gaza Rule

Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar back United Nations declaration to disarm Hamas and end their rule of Gaza.

What Happened?

A seven-page text agreed to at a United Nations conference included language demanding that Hamas disarm and give up its rule of Gaza. Several Arab nations, including Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, voiced support for the text, including the provisions about Hamas.

The United Nations declaration said that in the context of ending the war in Gaza, Hamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority. With international engagement and support, in line with the objective of a sovereign and independent Palestinian State.

Why it Matters

The support from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar marked the first time Arab nations have publicly supported calls for Hamas to be disarmed and for Hamas to renounce its rule of Gaza. Though the declaration was non-binding, it is still an important signal of the changing public opinion about Hamas in the Arabic speaking world.

While Israel remains deeply unpopular in Arab nations, Hamas too has now become a pariah in parts of in the Middle East. The stubborn support for Hamas prior to the October 7th attacks on Israel recalls the words of the late Fouad Ajami, who once wrote that many in the Middle East were ‘addicted to failure.’

Crypto's "Once Per Cycle" Wealth-Building Moment Is Here

We’ve entered the next phase of the crypto cycle—where smart capital moves early and retail follows late. With fundamentals stronger than ever and institutional adoption accelerating, the window to act is now. While others wait for certainty, the informed few are positioning for outsized gains.

Failure is the only description that fits the outcome of the war Hamas launched against Israel for Gaza. Israel has dominated the conflict in every aspect, from ground operations to an air campaign that has few parallels in military history. The result has been the widespread destruction of Gaza and the deaths of 60,000 Palestinians.

Why has public opinion in the Middle East began to turn against Hamas? The massive destruction of Gaza and the humanitarian disaster it has become is still referred to as a great victory by Hamas leaders and their supporters.

Hamas still has supporters in the Middle East, that should not be doubted, but for many the destruction of Gaza simply cannot be reconciled with claims of success. Hamas is not only addicted to failure, it is also addicted to death, and that is something many people in Levant do not want for themselves or their children.

Hatred of Israel has also increased in the Middle East, as many people in Arab nations accuse Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza. But for Arab countries to speak out against Hamas in public is a significant change because groups like Hamas cannot exist without the support of the Arab street.

How it Affects You

One of the big questions about the Gaza War is whether or not it might usher in a new age of terrorism. If Arab public opinion turns against Hamas, then a new wave of terrorism could be less likely to emerge.
