What Happened?

The U.S. Department of Education has entered into a series of new agreements that redistribute several of its responsibilities to other federal agencies. The changes are part of the Trump administration’s effort to reduce the department’s direct involvement in education governance while still maintaining many of the services and protections already in place.

Rather than having a single department oversee a wide range of education-related functions, certain duties will now be managed by specialized agencies. Responsibilities connected to civil rights enforcement, special education, and other administrative functions will continue under different federal oversight structures. The White House believes this approach will streamline government operations and place more emphasis on state and local decision-making.

Moving forward, state and local leaders, as well as school districts themselves, will have the opportunity to play a larger role in determining how education policies are implemented rather than federal officials in Washington. While the agreements do not eliminate federal involvement in education, they do reorganize how that involvement is carried out. The idea is that the new structure will reduce bureaucracy and make government more responsive to families and local educators.

Why It Matters

Some of the biggest education debates concern parents who feel they have little say or influence over decisions affecting their children. Issues ranging from curriculum content and school choice to student privacy and disciplinary policies have triggered disputes between families and school districts and have even reached the Supreme Court. But moving forward, parents and local communities will have a much stronger voice…

Minnesota passed it. New Hampshire followed. Pennsylvania is next. States countrywide are passing legislation on flying cars because they know what's coming.*

Doroni’s been preparing for this moment for years. Their H1-X aircraft is designed to travel as far as 100 miles at up to 120 mph before parking in a two-car garage. That attracted 600+ pre-orders worth $240M+ in potential revenue.

Last year, the FAA cleared the path toward certification. Now states are doing their part.

After unveiling the full-sized showroom prototype of their H1-X personal aircraft in March, Doroni’s preparing to start test flights with the FAA next year.

By 2028, they’re targeting the first commercial deliveries. By 2032, they’ve got a $1.4B annual revenue target. Which is why the timing of this raise couldn't be better.

Any issues moving forward will likely be expedited, as responsibilities will now be handled by agencies that already specialize in those areas. For example, K-12 program administration is being moved to the Department of Labor, and international education initiatives will be managed by the State Department.

The White House believes placing programs with agencies already working in related fields will substantially reduce administrative overlap and simplify federal operations.

How It Affects You

For anyone who has felt frustrated by federal-level decisions affecting their children’s education, these changes are likely a welcome transition that places more authority closer to home. Curricula, disciplinary policies, and student resources are aspects that nearly everyone has an opinion on, and now they will be shaped by leaders at the state level and by school boards in local communities.

This also likely means there will be greater disparities in education between states. A state that prioritizes school choice may expand voucher programs that help families pay for private schools. Another may invest more heavily in traditional public schools.

One district may emphasize specific rhetoric in its curriculum, while another may leave it out entirely. Rather than a single federal department exerting influence over these debates, the people most affected by the decisions could have a greater opportunity to shape outcomes through both local involvement and state-level elections.
