What Happened?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to evolve rapidly, with sustained transmission and increasing numbers of reported cases.

As of 17 June, a cumulative of 896 confirmed cases, including 232 deaths, have been reported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As of 18 June, Uganda has reported 19 confirmed cases, including two deaths, as well as one probable case who has died.

Because the outbreak is centered on an area with little security and the frequent movement of people to and from mining camps, containing the spread is proving difficult for health officials.

Why it Matters

BVD belongs to the family of Ebola viruses, and there is currently no cure for the disease. Ebola spreads through direct contact and is not airborne, but the possibility of BVD being carried by a passenger on an airplane or ship remains real. Though the WHO continues to classify the global risk as low, because Ebola has such a high mortality rate, if an outbreak occurred in a major city, it could quickly get out of control…

Apple just enabled Starlink satellite support to T-Mobile iPhones.

One of the biggest potential winners from global satellite coverage?

Just about everything Elon touches turns to gold:

  • SpaceX IPOs at $1.77T

  • Tesla up by over 30,000% since IPO

  • And now - iPhone’s get satellite access

But while Wall Street focuses on Apple, Mode Mobile is quietly positioned to capitalize on this global satellite revolution.

Their EarnPhone technology already:

And that was before global satellite coverage.

With SpaceX eliminating "dead zones," Mode's earning technology can reach 3B+ unbanked people globally in rural populations worldwide.

Over 59,000 shareholders have already claimed their shares and they’ve just secured the $MODE ticker from Nasdaq. The time to invest is now, before any potential IPO.*

Unlike the Zaire strain, which caused the devastating West African epidemic from 2014 to 2016, there is currently no approved vaccine specifically designed for the BVD strain of Ebola, making containment more challenging. The first infections appear to have occurred in northeastern Congo, particularly in Ituri Province, before health authorities officially recognized the outbreak. By late June, the number of confirmed cases had exceeded one thousand, with more than 250 deaths reported.

Population displacement caused by armed conflict in eastern Congo has complicated efforts to track infections. Cases have appeared in overcrowded camps for displaced people, where sanitation is poor and people frequently move between communities in search of food and work. Health officials have also struggled with incomplete contact tracing, shortages of protective equipment, and distrust of government health services. Some patients have initially sought help from traditional healers rather than hospitals, delaying diagnosis and increasing transmission.

This Ebola outbreak is already the fastest growing incident on record, though previous outbreaks affected many more people. But because the BVD outbreak in Congo is still young, it could go on to become one of the biggest Ebola outbreaks in history. In areas where the outbreak occurred, burial rituals, which involve briefly touching the bodies of the deceased have likely fueled the spread of the virus to family members of the infected.

How it Affects You

Because the initial symptoms of Ebola are similar to malaria, early cases are often misdiagnosed, which can allow infected people to continue spreading the illness. Several international organizations have contributed more resources to Uganda and Congo to help contain the spread, since those nations have poor health care capabilities.

These actions followed the announcement by the WHO that the outbreak is classified as a public health emergency of global concern.
