A drone attack took place at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta on July 29, 2026. The principal vessel involved was the Energos Winter, a U.S.-owned floating storage and regasification unit operating in an Egyptian port. Egypt’s cabinet said an unidentified drone struck the vessel and started a fire that spread to a second gas ship, the GasLog Salem.

Emergency crews extinguished the blaze, and officials reported no deaths or injuries. No government or armed group had claimed responsibility as of July 30, as Egypt opened an investigation.

The Energos Winter converts imported liquefied natural gas back into gas for use by power plants, industries, and households. Its regasification capacity is approximately 450 million cubic feet per day, about seven percent of Egypt’s daily gas consumption and sixteen percent of its liquid natural gas receiving capacity

If shipowners believe vessels, terminals, or nearby ports are becoming targets, war-risk insurance premiums could rise, and more companies could send ships around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, adding approximately fifteen days to some voyages between the Arabian Sea and Europe. That would lead to longer trips and rising shipping costs, which would ultimately be paid by consumers around the world.

Egypt has other import terminals and backup fuels, so the damage is not expected to create an immediate nationwide shortage. Nevertheless, a lengthy outage could reduce the country’s safety margin during peak summer demand, potentially forcing greater use of costly fuel oil or temporary limits on gas supplied to industry.

The strike also risks drawing Egypt more directly into a regional war it has tried to manage through diplomacy. Egypt is the largest, most populous, and most important Arab country. Iran and Egypt have never fought a direct war against each other, though Egypt did provide material support to Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s. Iran and Egypt are the two largest countries in the Middle East; any direct conflict between them would likely increase the scale and impact of the current war dramatically.

The attack was limited in casualties but potentially larger in strategic significance. It exposed the vulnerability of civilian energy infrastructure, threatened confidence in the Suez route just as traffic was recovering from earlier Red Sea disruptions, and showed how inexpensive drones can create economic effects far beyond the physical damage they cause.

Whether the incident remains isolated or becomes the opening of a new maritime front will depend on the investigation, the identity of the attacker, and the willingness of regional powers to prevent retaliation from spreading.
