Cruise Ship Hit with Hantavirus Outbreak Heads Towards Canary Islands
Cruise ship hit with hantavirus outbreak evacuates those infected while monitoring the remaining passengers.

What Happened?
Two people are in a serious condition after they were evacuated from a cruise ship with a confirmed outbreak of hantavirus. Both passengers arrived in the Netherlands for treatment, according to the ship’s operator Oceanwide Expeditions. A third passenger was in stable condition and scheduled for an evacuation flight, though the flight has not yet taken place.
The ship in question, the MV Hondius, is currently enroute to Spain's Canary Islands after being anchored for three days off Cape Verde, which is an archipelago nation off the West African coast. Health officials from two U.S. states said they were monitoring three former passengers from the ship, but none have any symptoms.
Why it Matters
The hantavirus outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius has drawn international attention because it illustrates how quickly infectious diseases can spread through global travel networks and how even rare viruses can threaten worldwide health. Health officials believe the virus may have originated before passengers boarded the ship, possibly during wildlife excursions near Ushuaia, Argentina, where some travelers may have been exposed to rodents carrying the Andes strain of hantavirus.
Why Apple’s latest move has #1 software company’s investors excited
Apple just enabled Starlink satellite support to T-Mobile iPhones.
One of the biggest potential winners from global satellite coverage?
Just about everything Elon touches turns to gold:
• SpaceX projected IPO at $1.75T
• Tesla up by over 30,000% since IPO
• And now - iPhone’s get satellite access
But while Wall Street focuses on Apple, Mode Mobile is quietly positioned to capitalize on this global satellite revolution.
Their EarnPhone technology already:
• Reaches 490M+ users worldwide
• Helped those users save and earn over $1 billion
• Grew revenue 32,481%
And that was before global satellite coverage.
With SpaceX eliminating "dead zones," Mode's earning technology can reach 3B+ unbanked people globally in rural populations worldwide.

Hantavirus is a class of viruses first discovered in the Hantan River in Korea. Mice and other rodents often carry the hantavirus. Humans can contract the virus if they are exposed to infected rodents or their saliva, urine, or droppings. Although rare, the disease is potentially deadly, especially if it involves the kidneys, heart, or lungs. Early symptoms can resemble the flu, such as muscles aches, vomiting, and diarrhea, but can quickly become life-threatening if fluid fills the lungs.
A total of 146 people from 23 different countries remain aboard the MV Hondius under ‘strict precautionary measures,’ Oceanwide Expeditions said. In its latest update, the World Health Organization said eight cases of hantavirus, three confirmed and five suspected, have so far been identified in people who were on the ship.
The outbreak caused major concern because the strain involved appears to be the Andes hantavirus, one of the few hantavirus strains capable of limited human-to-human transmission. Most hantaviruses spread when people inhale particles contaminated by infected rodent urine, droppings, or saliva.
However, the Andes strain has occasionally spread between people through close contact, especially in households or crowded conditions. The largest ever outbreak of Hantavirus occurred in the southwestern United States in 1993, with a total of forty-eight infections.
How it Affects You
Cruise ships are especially vulnerable to disease outbreaks because passengers live in close quarters while sharing dining areas, entertainment facilities, and ventilation systems. Although hantavirus is far less contagious than viruses such as COVID-19 or influenza, the confined environment of a cruise ship increases opportunities for exposure and complicates medical response efforts.
Cruise ships often contain passengers from many different locations and countries, so when they disembark, the potential for an onboard outbreak to spread globally is significant. While experts emphasize that the risk to the public remains low, the incident demonstrates how rapidly infectious diseases can cross borders and how important early detection, international cooperation, and strong public health systems are in preventing future outbreaks from becoming global crises.
