Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky has introduced a 34-page resolution containing eight articles of impeachment against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and designated it a privileged resolution, a procedural move requiring the House to address it within two legislative days unless congressional leaders alter the schedule.

Massie, a libertarian-leaning Republican argues that Hegseth has repeatedly used the military in ways that violate federal law and Congress’s constitutional authority. The most important accusation concerns Iran. Massie alleges that Hegseth participated in continuing hostilities against Iran without a declaration of war or specific congressional authorization, in violation of the 1973 War Powers Resolution.

The immediate chances of Hegseth being removed from office appear limited. Republicans control the House, and current reporting describes passage of the impeachment resolution as unlikely. Even House impeachment would not automatically remove Hegseth: the Senate would still have to conduct a trial, where conviction and removal would require a two-thirds vote.

Despite the long odds, the vote could still influence debate over the Iran war. A substantial vote against Hegseth, particularly if Republicans joined Democrats, could increase congressional pressure for tighter restrictions on military operations or a negotiated end to hostilities. Conversely, defeating or tabling the resolution would allow Hegseth to remain in office and would not itself change the administration’s authority or military strategy.

The electoral consequences could be more immediate. The Iran conflict has become politically contentious as casualties, military expenditures, and disruptions to oil shipments have accumulated. Massie’s maneuver could force vulnerable lawmakers to take a recorded position on Hegseth and the conduct of the war shortly before voters go to the polls.
