China Expresses Opposition to Military Ties Between the U.S. and Taiwan
Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C. expresses opposition to military ties between the U.S. and Taiwan.
What Happened?
During an interview with Newsweek, Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu expressed ‘firm opposition’ to military ties between the U.S. and Taiwan. Mr. Pengyu then added, ‘Deepening such ties will not bring security to Taiwan, it will only heighten cross-strait tensions and the risk of confrontation.’
The statement from the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. came after several hundred members of Taiwan’s military participated in a joint exercise with the U.S. military on an island in Lake Michigan to simulate repelling an invasion of Taiwan from Chinese military forces.
Why it Matters
Beijing claims Taiwan as part of China’s territory, and in the past year China’s Air Force has conducted frequent flights into Taiwanese airspace. Taiwan rejects China’s claims, asserting its own independence as a sovereign nation.
Tensions between Taiwan and China have risen as each side has escalated rhetoric and increased military exercises in preparation for potential conflict with each other.

The recent exercise in Lake Michigan, code named Northern Strike, reportedly used an island with terrain that is similar to Taiwan’s coastline, suggesting an opportunity to simulate a Chinese attack on Taiwan and how the Taiwanese military could repel it.
According to the U.S. military, the purpose of the exercise was not focused on China specifically but included ‘maritime missions such as protecting high-value assets and engaging targets within littoral and open-water environment.’
In December, Chinese President Xi said, ‘no force could stop the historic trend of unification with Taiwan,’ then characterizing the two neighbors as ‘one and the same family.’
The language used by Xi to describe the relationship between Taiwan and China is similar to that employed by Russian President Putin to describe relations between Ukraine and Russia. Both utilize a selective reading of history to justify their territorial claims over neighboring countries.
China has expanded its military capabilities in the past few years by modernizing its air force and navy. In particular, China’s Air Force has added significant numbers of advanced fighter and bomber aircraft that appear to be capable of targeting U.S. military assets in the Pacific region.
Chinese nationalism has surged in the past few years, and that is the audience President Xi is playing to when he makes his claims about Taiwan being part of China.
The United States does not formally recognize Taiwan as an independent country, but despite that American military supplies have continued to arrive in Taiwan in increasing numbers.
How it Affects You
Allowing Taiwanese troops to participate in a joint exercise with the U.S. military is a clear sign of strengthening military ties between the U.S. and Taiwan.
Thus far the Trump Administration has not replied to the comments made by the Chinese Embassy.
