Bulletin of Atomic Scientists Puts Doomsday Clock at Eighty-Five Seconds till Midnight
Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moves doomsday clock to eighty-five seconds till midnight, the closest it’s ever been.

What Happened?
The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a science-based advocacy group, moved their widely known doomsday clock to eighty-five seconds until midnight, the closest it has ever been since the group’s inception during the Cold War.
During the Cold War, the doomsday clock symbolized how close the world was to nuclear war, and the group said today that while nuclear war remains a threat, there are other threats to be considered, including new technologies and climate change.
According to Alexandra Bell, the President and CEO of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, ‘Humanity has not made sufficient progress on the existential risks that endanger us all.’
Why it Matters
During the Cold War, midnight on the doomsday clock meant nuclear war. Several times during the Cold War, the clock was moved closer to midnight. But today, the combined threats of potential nuclear war, artificial intelligence, and climate change have all combined to create an unprecedentedly dangerous situation in the view of the scientists at the bulletin.

The board cited leadership failure as the primary factor responsible for moving the clock forward four seconds from last year. According to the bulletin’s assessment, the most powerful countries in the world, including the United States, China, and Russia, have become more aggressive, nationalistic, and adversarial in the past year. Today, midnight on the doomsday clock represents the point where human beings render the earth uninhabitable.
There have always been critics of the bulletin’s work, including other scientists who argue the doomsday clock is based more on subjective feelings than hard, scientific facts. With more wars going on today than at any other time since the end of World War II, more extreme weather than any other time on record, and significant social and economic disruption due to the rise of A.I. There does seem to be some quantifiable facts behind the bulletin’s most recent assessment.
In order to mitigate the top threats currently facing the world today, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists recommended that leading nations such as the United States, Russia, and China reduce their nuclear arsenals and institute more stringent regulations for new A.I. technologies. The bulletin has long pushed for an increase in renewable energy, which Europe has embraced, but the current leadership of the United States has rejected.
How it Affects You
During the Cold War, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists held a significant amount of influence, and world leaders paid attention to their assessments, as did the public. That influence has decreased today, and some world leaders consider the bulletin itself to be a relic of the Cold War.
It is not necessary to support all the recommendations the bulletin makes to recognize that the scientific perspective it provides on threats facing humanity can still have value.
