AI Powered Virtual Sales Agents in China Livestream Around the Clock

AI powered virtual sales avatars livestream twenty-four hours a day in China selling products.

What Happened?

Artificial intelligence powered virtual sales agents in China sell products twenty-four hours a day, and according to some reports the amount of sales they generate outperforms human salespeople.

According to Wired, AI virtual sales agents were created by a Shanghai-based marketing company called PLTFRM, which says it has deployed around 30 similar avatars across Chinese ecommerce sites like Alibaba’s Taobao and Pinduoduo, the sister site of Temu.

The virtual sales agents are visually represented by life-like avatars and use large language models to share information about the products they are selling as well as answer questions from potential customers via chat rooms. 

Why it Matters

With the increase in AI programs and platforms in the past few years, several companies have started experimenting with new ways to apply them. In the field of sales, most companies have used AI as a tool for their human salespeople to utilize to increase productivity.

But the PLTFRM approach appears to be one of the first attempts to truly create an AI salesforce that operates without direct human input.

So when Mode Mobile potentially goes public, most people will have missed a tech darling that is completely rethinking the $500B smartphone industry, letting users earn and save money simply by using their phones.*

Alexandre Ouairy, the co-founder of PLTFRM, recently claimed their virtual sales agents have been outperforming human salespeople for the companies who use them.

As an example, he cited Brother Industries, a Japanese company that produces printers, which claimed in a press release that their AI avatar sold $2,500 worth of printers in its first two hours online. And that its livestream sales since switching to AI avatars have gone up by thirty percent. 

In the United States, AI generated influencers and videos have been becoming more prevalent on several platforms including YouTube and Instagram. The growth of AI generated content raises concerns that the internet could become overwhelmed with AI slop, a term meant to characterize content that is AI generated but of poor quality.

Thus far neither government regulators nor technology platforms themselves have devised an effective way of handling the growth of AI content.

From a practical perspective, twenty-four-hour sales agents could have some advantages, such as being able to operate across multiple time zones without increasing the need for more human employees.

While the current avatars do have some limitations, such as technical glitches which cause them to occasionally freeze for a few seconds, many are of good enough quality that they look and sound human to the casual observer. 

How it Affects You

Since the technology required to create virtual sales agents has become cheaper and more accessible, it is possible there will be an increase in AI sales agents in the next few years.

But sales is more than just making a pitch, it also requires the ability to answer questions and connect with potential customers. Whether or not AI sales agents can do that will likely determine their success or failure in the market. 

*Mode Mobile recently received their ticker reservation with Nasdaq ($MODE), indicating an intent to IPO in the next 24 months. An intent to IPO is no guarantee that an actual IPO will occur.
