What Happened?
A coalition of 40 mayors from cities across North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia has signed a new agreement to shape the future of AI-driven data center development. The pact was launched by C40 Cities amid growing concerns that the rapid expansion of data centers is placing increasing pressure on local power grids, water supplies, and available land.
C40 estimates that about 1,700 data centers are already located within its member cities, while development is projected to increase by more than 40% across 50 cities in the next few years. City leaders say they are facing many of the same challenges as technology companies race to expand the infrastructure needed to support artificial intelligence.
In Phoenix, Arizona proposed data center projects could double regional electricity demand if fully built out. In Melbourne, Australia planned facilities are expected to consume up to 20 billion liters, or 5.3 billion gallons, of water annually. The agreement calls for future projects to use cleaner energy sources, reduce water consumption, utilize underused land, and contribute to the infrastructure upgrades needed to support their growth.
Why It Matters
The agreement highlights a growing challenge facing communities around the world as artificial intelligence drives an unprecedented wave of data center construction. While these facilities support everything from cloud computing to AI tools, they also require enormous amounts of electricity, water, and land.
As more projects are announced, local officials are beginning to seriously weigh the economic benefits against the strain they can place on existing infrastructure…
Apple just enabled Starlink satellite support to T-Mobile iPhones.
One of the biggest potential winners from global satellite coverage?
Just about everything Elon touches turns to gold:
SpaceX IPOs at $1.77T
Tesla up by over 30,000% since IPO
And now - iPhone’s get satellite access
But while Wall Street focuses on Apple, Mode Mobile is quietly positioned to capitalize on this global satellite revolution.
Their EarnPhone technology already:
Reaches 490M+ users worldwide
Helped those users save and earn over $1 billion
And that was before global satellite coverage.
With SpaceX eliminating "dead zones," Mode's earning technology can reach 3B+ unbanked people globally in rural populations worldwide.
We’re talking about emerging markets with no infrastructure.
Right now, you can still invest at $0.52/share.
Over 59,000 shareholders have already claimed their shares and they’ve just secured the $MODE ticker from Nasdaq. The time to invest is now, before any potential IPO.*
Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming a strategic priority for governments and technology companies, and the infrastructure supporting that growth must be built somewhere. Cities increasingly find themselves balancing the promise of new jobs and investment against concerns that residents could be left footing the bill for expanded power systems, water infrastructure, and other public services needed to support massive facilities.
Rather than competing for every project at any cost, many city leaders are coming around to the idea that future developments should provide clear benefits to the communities hosting them. As AI infrastructure spreads around the world, the outcome of that debate could shape billions of dollars in investment and determine which communities benefit most from the industry's growth.
How It Affects You
Communities want the jobs, tax revenue, and economic activity that come along with AI and its infrastructure, but residents also expect reliable utilities, affordable housing, and infrastructure that can keep pace with growth. As cities gain more influence over where and how data centers are built, future projects are likely to face stricter requirements to contribute to local communities rather than simply consume local resources.
It’s likely that developers will be asked to invest more heavily in local hiring or build in areas less disruptive to surrounding neighborhoods, which may result in slower approvals in some places, but many believe it could also lead to projects that provide more direct benefits to residents.
